Video poker is one of the most entertaining and fun casino games. With the coming of the online video poker games, the fan base of the game has increased manifold because of the several advantages offered by the online versions. Now, the game can be easily found in the land based and online casinos. The history of video poker is an interesting one and explains how slot machines and poker blended together.

In 1891, a company called Sittman and Pitt in New York invented the first poker machine. The machine had 5 drums each of which consisted on 10 cards each. The players had to insert a nickel into the machine to start playing. According to the game, after inserting the nickel, the machine would display 5 cards. These 5 cards made up the hand of the player. During those initial days the prizes were small ones and consisted of free drinks and cigars. These were popular forms of entertainment in bars. These initial machines consisting of only 50 cards did not include the jack of hearts and tens of spade which drastically reduced the probability of getting a royal flush.

One of the major changes made to the machine was made by Charles Fey, the Father of Slot Machines in 1898. The machine was modified in such a way so that cash prizes could be paid to the winners directly. The machine was named Card Bell and had a payout of maximum 20 coins for a royal flush. The original Card Bell machine has been preserved and is on display in the Liberty Belle Saloon and Restaurant in Nevada. The hold feature of video poker games, which is now an important part of the game, was also introduced in the game at this stage.

Dale Electronics created the first electronic video poker machine in 1970s and named it Poker-Matic. Poker-Matic was an instant hit with the public and was soon featured in the different casinos of Las Vegas. In 1979, another version of video poker was invented which had both the hold and draw features. This new version of video poker machine soon became more popular than Poker-Matic and began to dominate the market.

In the present day video poker is also available in the online casinos. This has increased accessibility to the game thus making it more popular. With coming of advanced and better technology, video poker games are still evolving and more interesting feature and variations are sure to come up.
